Web 2.0 completed!!!

Long after the closing date I have managed to finish the program and I have learnt an awful lot of interesting stuff.

Web Awards

Well I will have to forget about using Gliffy etc for a family tree now that I have seen the awards for the genealogy sites, they will be much better. This list of top sites will be really useful and save a lot of time searching for sites myself. I looked at the books, food, travel awards and will save the list to my favourites for future use. I think I am finally done!!!

Flow Charts

I have finally tried Gliffy and designed a livingroom. Very easy to use and will go back to it sometime soon to do my family tree. Sent the link to my sister as she will love the floorplans as she is redesigning her holiday house. I can see these sites would be really useful for work and for home.

Newsletters

This was one of the easier exercises I thought and I created a newsletter for the book club that I belong to. Let's see if I can add it to my blog!!!

Oh well not successful this time but never mind I might come back to it when I have more time.

E-Books

E-books look great but I had problems actually reading any as our network prohibited it but I was amazed at how much is available in this format. Could be really useful for remote users if the cost is not prohibitive. I will have a look at this from home and see if access is easy. Out of print material would be great to source. I may find I get sick of reading on the screen as it could be very hard on the eyes but I am keen to give it a try.

And here is a video of my favourite play, Richard III. Sadly it is Laurence Olivier, not my most admired actor. I searched for Andrew Jarvis but no luck!

And another, more serious, Shakespeare video.

Found some funny Shakespeare videos so managed to add one. This could be useful for our writers talks and for marketing the library.

Podcasts

After many fruitless attempts to master these podcasts, with a little help from my friend, I have managed to add a few podcasts to my Google Reader. We had to go about it via Google Reader though, it didn;t seem to work via the resources suggested. Searched for recipe podcasts (vodcasts?) but found many of them didn't work but then Bingo! I found a very good site called "Show me the curry" and it has some really terrific things on it.

Podcasts

Still struggling with podcasts as I can't seem to work it out. I'll have another go later. I do think we will be able to use them though as we can video the Lunchtime Writer's Talks and add them to our Library home page. Just hope our system can cope.

Rollyo

Well finally, after a few attempts, managed to add the Rollyo searchbox to my blog but a bit of an effort and had to get some help. I am obvioulsy not intuitive enough for this sort of thing as I could get so far with each element but then came to grinding halt. Sonya was very helpful. I do think it could be a very useful little tool that could save time once set up. Added it to my desktop and to my favourites and will now set about creating some serious rolls that I can use for work, having created some recreational ones for pleasure.

Wikis

Just had a look at Wikis and can see that they could be really useful for us. Patrons can give is comments and suggestions and share things of interest. The possiblities are probably endless. Couldn't find anything about how to set one up though, maybe I missed something. It was nice to read the origin of the word Wiki as some of these apparently meaningless terms for things don't make it easy to remember what they are. Even though the explanation doesn't really explain what it is, it does help me to have something to grasp.

Delicious

Delicious turned out to be a bit of a non-event for us as we can't add the buttons as our firewalls block adding software or extra programmes. I even tried on our stand-alone internet computer, that is outside the network, but no luck there either. I have created an account and when I feel strong enough at home to look at a computer I might have a go but I am not holding my breath for that event. Time to move on to the next 'thing'.

Really getting into this now

Have set up my iGoogle page and aded some extras, RSS feeds, currency converter, world clocks etc. I am also organising an event using Facebook as the guests are nearly all young and keep up with their sites so it is an easy way to update them with the details. I just 'Facebook' them!!

They are quite amused. I am hoping to work out how to send them a map, a restaurant review and a menu when I get to that point, might be a bit ambitious for me though.

Noticed that The 2009 ALIA Library Technician's Conference website is up and running today and it particularly includes a link to Facebook to encourage communication with Lib Techs met a previous conferences. Very clever I thought. I already have a WA Tech and a NT Tech on mine so might be able to add some more.

Facebook again and Google everything!

Checked my Facebook and one of my family had written on my wall!! I reminded them that graffiti is illegal. Looked at Google and didn't realise there is so much there. I found some pictures which I saved and I do think that Google Docs could be very useful for us in the library. Could also be handy for personal docs but not sure of the security, maybe not. Looked at the Maps and found the street in England where I was born and hopefully have saved it as default. I even signed up for a Gmail account. Getting the hang of this all finally.

Facebook

Created myself a Facebook entry so I can keep up with what the young things I know are up to, not really my sort of thing though. Can't see a place in our library for it but you never know and at least I know what it is now.

Google reader

Have had a play with Google reader and added some feeds, then it began to look messy but was able to organise categories into folders so felt as if I was in control for a change.

Will have to keep an eye out for more things to add, and then work out how to add them from the web. Very short on instructions these sites, one has to just fiddle and/or use help!

This really could be a very time-saving addition to our useful tools.

LibraryThing

Tried LibraryThing last week and became quite excited about it. I really think I could use this personally and we could try using it for the library to get feed back on popular texts and maybe suggestions for books to buy (funds being available of course!) I dream!!!

I belong to a book club and we might be able to use it especially for people who may be absent from meetings who could add there thoughts on the monthly book.

Very promising.

GO TIGES!!!

I should have added a comment but never mind. I just thinks sometimes that I could do a better job than certain full forwards in the tigers team. I can dream anyway. It took me a few attempts to add this image but I'm getting there slowly. This was more fun that last week anyway. I might even have another look around at the images.

After further very stressful attempts I have finally managed to add some pictures, it helps to be logged in properly I discovered! Too many logins and passwords for my liking. Maybe now I can start to enjoy this.

Phew!!! It's a miracle!

Am I really here? Is this it!!!! I can not believe how overwhelming I have found this exercise, and me who was quite cocky about the whole thing. Serves me right I say!!! It appears that in my many aborted attempts to greate a blog I inadvertently did make one. Let's hope it is just onwards and upwards from here on.
I don't even know what I am going to put in this blog, I'll have to wait for inspiration.
